Obituary for Metro "Pete" Glovach

Metro “Pete” Glovach, 99, loving father of three children and friend to all, passed away at home on May 30, 2020, surrounded by his children (Lana, Lori, and Gregory), his “bonus daughter” Joan, and his extended family and friends.

The son of the late Mary (Smarsh) and Gregory Glovach, Pete was born on September 7, 1920 in Olyphant, PA. He was the last surviving of 12 children. He served in the United States Navy as a Gunner’s Mate, Third Class, from October 1942 until he was honorably discharged in February 1946. While serving during WWII, Pete received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and Victory Medal. He later settled in Providence, RI and raised a family with Leonilda, his beloved late wife. As a member of the local Teamsters union, Pete worked many years at Providence Wholesale Drug Company, from which he retired in 1985. For several years after that, he worked at The Castle Spa on Chalkstone Avenue in Providence.

Pete’s style was easy and simple, and his heart was happy and giving. True to his generation, Pete loved baseball and football, and he enjoyed following these sports on television. He was very physically active, walking all over Providence for so many years, visiting many friends and acquaintances. He loved to play cards; in fact, he was the namesake of the “Pete High Low Jack League,” which will carry on as he would have wanted, Christmas card and all.

Pete finally fulfilled a wish, in his own words, to “go to college.” An anatomical gift donor, he is now at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he will continue to give by furthering the education and training of medical students. He did always say: “study, study, study!”

Although he made it to his 100th year, Pete was really hoping to reach his 100th birthday this fall. To honor that wish, his children anticipate holding a remembrance/celebration of his life in early September, if the pandemic cooperates. Please check with them for details towards the end of the summer. In recognition of the loving and good care Pete received at home over these many last years, particularly from Mary, Jessie, and Domingas, donations in his memory may be sent to either BAYADA Home Health Care (, 171 Service Avenue, Warwick, RI 02886, or Hospice of NPI, 334 East Avenue, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
