Obituary for Mary Dyer Bogan
Mary Dyer Bogan of Providence died August 10th at her home in Providence in her daughter’s arms. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Edward Anthony Dyer and Mary (Payne) Dyer, she was a painter in the abstract expressionist style of the New York School. A graduate of RISD with a Master’s from Brown University, she retired from teaching Art and History at Hope High School in 1971 to help her daughter, Mary Flair Bogan, pursue an acting career in New York, returning six years later to Providence where her daughter became a financial advisor. In the 1980’s Mary Dyer Bogan held office as a member of the Red Bridge Chapter of Republican Woman and the RI Federation of Republican Women. She was a member of the Brown Faculty Club and a life member of the Providence Art Club. She had fond memories of her career as a stewardess with American Airlines before she graduated from RISD. She was in the first class to be plucked from college campuses, one of 2000 local applicants. She met her late ex-husband Ralph Bogan through his sister who was her roommate in the airlines, and travelled with him by bus up to Alcan to open the first Greyhound bus station in Fairbanks, Alaska for his father’s company.
She was the sister of the late Francis E. Dyer, Julia E. Whitcomb and Ann J. Dyer. She leaves her daughter, Mary Flair Bogan and six nieces and nephews.
