Obituary for Mary Cummings Chatterton
Providence: Chatterton, Mary Cummings, 82, devoted daughter, mother and wife, died peacefully March 2, 2011 at Bethany Home in Providence, thus ending her months long illness.
The wife of the late Allen H. Chatterton, Jr, she was born in Providence on September 30, 1928 to Mary Devlin Cummings and Matthew Joseph Cummings. She was a lifelong resident of Providence, and summer resident of Matunuck.
Mrs. Chatterton Graduated from The Mary C. Wheeler School in 1946 and received a Bachelors of Science degree in education from Wheelock College in 1950. She was an elementary school teacher at the William R. Dutemple School in Cranston until 1957 when she dedicated herself to the care and well being of her family. Mrs. Chatterton was a member of the Agawam Hunt, Point Judith Country Club, the To Kalon Club, Willow Dell Beach Club and the Dunes Club where she enjoyed playing tennis, golf, bridge and the company of her many friends. She was also a lifelong communicant of Saint Sebastian church in Providence, and Saint Francis and Saint Romuald in South Kingstown.
Mrs. Chatterton leaves 3 children: Hope Chatterton McDermott, of Dedham MA, Allen H. Chatterton, III of Rumford, and Mary “Polly” Chatterton Handy of East Greenwich, as well as 9 grandchildren and twenty-seven nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister Margaret “Peggy” C. Perkins of Cranston.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, March 7 at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Sebastian Church, 67 Cole Avenue, Providence. Burial will follow in Swan Point Cemetery. Mrs. Chatterton’s family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Bethany Home, 111South Angell Street, Providence, RI or Odyssey Hospice, 2374 Post Road, Suite 206, Warwick, RI 02886.
