Obituary for Mary C. O'Brien
Providence: Mary C. O’Brien,74, formally of Lloyd Avenue,  passed on March 30th at Scalabrini Villa, North Kingstown, RI. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Leo O’Brien and Mary Elizabeth McGuiggan. Mary had a long and distinguished career in the Providence School Department. She began as a teacher in 1961, was principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary School and retired as Deputy Superintendent of Providence Public Schools in 1990. After leaving Providence, she served as Coordinator of Field Placement and Elementary Education at Salve Regina University, Newport until her retirement in 2000. An avid traveler, Mary visited many parts of the world, her favorite spot being Ireland where she visited often until a few years ago. Mary was a dedicated volunteer, using her many skills to benefit students and administrations as a member of the boards of both the San Miguel School, Providence and Bay View Academy, East Providence. Mary was a graduate of Classical High School and Brown University. She received her PhD in Education from Boston University. Mary is fondly remembered by a host of cousins and friends who will dearly miss her. Calling hours will be held at Monahan Drabble, Sherman funeral home, 230 Waterman St. Providence on Friday April 5 beginning at 8:30am, followed by a 10am mass of Christian Burial at St. Sebastian’s Church, 57 Cole Ave. Providence. Burial will be at St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Maynard, MA.
