Obituary for Marjory A. Dalenius
Marjory Schminck Truell Dalenius died on May 14th, two months shy of her 98th birthday.
Graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts with subsequent additional studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, she was a recognized mixed media assemblage artist. She participated in numerous regional shows in Newport, Little Compton and Providence, but is perhaps best known for her long association with the Providence Art Club where she became the first Gallery Director in 1968 and an exhibiting member in 1991. In 2011, she received the Providence Art Club Medal for her artistic accomplishment and service and remained a member of the Club until her death. Unafraid to experiment with all sorts of materials, her sculpture reflected her environmentally friendly attitude, often incorporating and combining mundane discarded objects into surprising contexts. She had longtime interest in Asian Art, was a member of the Rhode Island Bonsai Society, the League of Women Voters, Brown University Handicraft Club, the National Organization For Women in the Arts, and was involved in the Providence Preservation Society, the Rhode Island Historical Society and the RISD Art Museum.
She is survived by her daughters Ann Truell Bennett of Waldoboro, Maine and Marcia Truell Newren of Corrales, New Mexico; by her grandson Timothy Bennett and two great grandchildren; and by her stepson Eskil Dalenius of Linköping, Sweden. She is predeceased by her husbands Professor Rohn Truell and Professor Tore Dalenius.
Her unique style and insight, her curiosity and forthrightness, her humor and her incisive aesthetical analytical ability touched and inspired many.
Donations can be made in her name to the Providence Art Club. A private celebration of her life will take place at a later date.
