Obituary for Marjorie Borden Connelly
Marjorie Borden (Glines) Connolly, 94, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at Heatherwood Nursing Home in Newport. She was the wife of the late Walter A. Connolly, II who died in 1974. Born at home, Dec. 4, 1922, in Quincy, Mass., she was the only child of Helen (Borden) and Ralph Bryant Glines.
In her younger years, she lived in Canton, Mass., later moving to Sharon where she remained through high school. As a child, she learned to paint in the time she spent with her mother, an artist, and, while with her father, to golf and be rather handy with household tools. By the time she graduated from high school, she was both an accomplished young artist and a talented golfer. She went on to earn an art degree from the Modern School of Art in Boston.
Following art school, she began work as a fashion illustrator for the former Chandler’s Department Store on Tremont Street in Boston. During these years she mastered the art of sewing and was drafting patterns in muslin from photos she admired in Vogue magazine. In 1954, she joined her parents in Barrington, RI where they had retired to. It was during this time she met her husband to be. They married in 1955 at the Chapel at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington and settled on a family estate located on Barrington Beach. Following her husband’s death in 1974, and once her children had finished college, she moved to Little Compton where she remained until 1999 when she relocated to Portsmouth to be closer to her daughter.
During her years in Barrington, Little Compton and Portsmouth she remained involved with her favorite sport of golf and her many crafts including gardening, knitting, sewing and painting. She was a former member of Rhode Island Country Club, Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club, The Handicraft Club of Providence, Barrington Garden Club, Little Compton Garden Club, Elephant Rock Beach Club and the Newport Art Museum.
She leaves a son Walter A. Connolly III (Sarah); a daughter Christine MacDonald (Steven Fielding); two grandsons, Ian MacDonald (Tracy Harper) and Benjamin MacDonald; three granddaughters, Chelsie, Faith and Olivia Connolly and a great-grandson, Atticus Holmes MacDonald.
A graveside service will be held at a later time.
