Obituary for Lydia Teresa Lioce
LYDIA TERESA (PONTARELLI) Lioce, of Cranston died peacefully on October 11 at age 99. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mark's Church, 9 Garden Court, Cranston, on Thursday November 3 at 11 a.m. with private burial to follow. Born in Natick, R.I. on August 20, 1917 to Pasquale and Maurina (Angeloni) Pontarelli, she was the beloved sister of Velia Del Sesto of Providence, Esther Vacca of Franklin, Mass. and the late Alda Laterra of Providence; devoted mother of Anthony Lioce, Jr. of Berkeley, Ca., Stephen Lioce of Manhattan and Southampton, N.Y. and Mary Narvell of London, England; and cherished grandmother of Maurina Lioce of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Joanna Lioce of San Francisco. She also is survived by daughter-in-law Janet Cusick of Berkeley, son-in-law John Narvell of London, and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Lioce, who owned and operated the State Office Supply Co. in Providence for many years. She was a graduate of Classical High School and the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing in Providence and attended the Brown University extension school. Before her children were born she was a head nurse and supervisor of clinical experience at Butler Hospital in Providence where she worked for seven years and was an instructor at the Butler School of Nursing. She was a member of the Rhode Island State Nurses Association and an officer of the Rhode Island Hospital Nurses' Alumni Association, the Rhode Island State League of Nursing Education and the Rhode Island Hospital Guild and served on the board of directors of the Lucy C. Ayres Residence for Nurses. Fiercely proud of her Italian heritage, and a violinist, she loved classical music, especially Italian opera. And she loved her days on the beach at Watch Hill. In lieu of flowers please send donations in her memory to the Rhode Island Hospital Guild, 593 Eddy St., Annex Building Room 207, Providence 02903. May she rest in peace.
