Obituary for Lois Schneider Shumaker
Lois Schneider Shumaker died peacefully of natural causes on April 6, 2020, in Wakefield RI. She was born in Detroit, MI on April 22, 1925, the daughter of Ervin and Mabel Schneider, and grew up in Kalamazoo, where she met her future husband, William Shumaker. After her graduation from Michigan State University they were married in 1947. Shortly after their marriage the couple lived in England while Bill studied theology at Oxford University.
Bill was ordained into the clergy of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island in 1952; over the years he and Lois lived in Coventry, Pawtucket, Newport, Providence, North Providence and Wakefield. Lois spent many summers at the Episcopal Conference Center in Pascoag, where for some years she was the director of the Camp for Younger Girls. After earning a Master of Education degree from Rhode Island College Lois taught special education classes in the Pawtucket and Providence public schools until her retirement. In retirement she continued to pursue her interests in cooking, gardening, sewing, knitting and needlepoint.
Her husband, the Rev. Canon William N. Shumaker, died in 2007. Lois is survived by her children William P. Shumaker of Portland, ME, her daughter Mary S. Schreitmueller of Georgetown, TX, her son Robert B. Shumaker of Kingston, RI, her six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her children express their profound gratitude to the staff at Elderwood at Scallop Shell in Wakefield for the exemplary care they provided for Lois in the last years of her life. A private memorial service will be held when circumstances permit.
