Obituary for Katherine C. S. Downes
Katherine Campbell Salisbury Downes, 90, of Providence East Side passed on Thursday afternoon, July 14, 2016; at her home in the care of Hope Hospice.
Born in Providence January 27, 1926 to Cecil Wingate and Katherine Campbell Mitchell Salisbury. Katherine attended Mary C. Wheeler School and graduated from Stoneleigh Prospect Burnham in Greenfield MA. Married September 5, 1947 to Robert Ward Downes of Providence they lived and raised their family in Farmington, Maine. They returned to Providence in 1976. Katherine was active in St. Martin's Episcopal Church, National Society of Colonial Dames, Providence County Garden Club and RI Historical Society.
She was a direct descendent of Roger Williams and Lawrence Wilkinson, and Mayflower descendent of Richard Warren. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of 70 years, their children Frances Downes Todd, Ernest Ford Salisbury Downes and Robert Wingate Downes, Four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday at 11:30 in the Historic Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hope Hospice of RI, 1085 N. Main St., Providence, RI 02904.
