Joseph Raymond Carreiro, 90, died November 8, 2020. He was born in Bristol on February 21, 1930 to Jose Carreiro and Mary Souza and served in the United States Navy from 1950-1954 as a boatswain’s mate on the U.S.S. Midway and the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. He married Barbara Vileno of Providence in 1955. They raised three children in Bristol. He became a quahogger and earned the nickname “Middle Ground Joe” for raking a certain area of the Bristol Harbor. During the 1960s and 1970s, Joe owned the Bristol Refuse Removal Company and was a partner in Lindy’s Waste Paper. Joe sold both businesses during the mid-1980s and worked for Bristol Metal and later, Jack’s Salvage & Auto Parts from which he retired in 2019. Joe divorced during the late 1970s and married Eleanor Kelman Pearlman of Providence in 1982. They settled in Touisset, Warren, R.I. and were together until her death in 2017. In 2018, Joe moved to the Tourister Mill apartments. He belonged to the Almeida VFW Post in Bristol, was once a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s church and served as that school’s PTA president.
Joe is survived by his children Jane, Peter, and Amy Carreiro, step-daughter Lauren Pearlman-Sugita, daughter-in-law Dale Gregory Carreiro, son-in-laws Frank Willard, Rick Rohrs, and Seiji Sugita, sister Lydia Souza Borges and her daughter Eileen Borges and brother-in-law David Kelman. Joe had many nieces and nephews but was closest to Debbie Melino Wienda, Tony and Carol Melino and Brian Wienda. Joe also had numerous grandchildren including Alessandra, Nicholas, and Brent Carreiro and Adriana and Matthew Pearlman, and several great-grand- children. His step-sons are Joel, Stuart and Steven Pearlman. Joe was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, parents, sisters Ida Melino and Ann Clark, and brother-in-laws Eddie Borges and Tony Melino, Sr.
Joe believed he was fortunate in life and felt loved by his family, friends and neighbors. He was proud of his children and delighted in the time he spent with his grandchildren. His father wanted him to attend medical school so, Joe donated his body to the anatomical donor program at Brown University’s Warren Albert School of Medicine. Per Joe’s wishes, there will not be a memorial service. Donations in is memory may be made to the East Bay Food Pantry, 532 Wood st., Bristol, R.I. 02809
