Obituary for Jean L. Babcock
Jean Babcock, 87, of Portsmouth, RI slipped her mooring, Sunday, August 10, and sailed into the morning sun.
All her life Jean was a busy and active participant in many social and civic programs on Aquidneck Island. She was a graduate of Rogers High School and Simmons College Nursing Program. Jean served on the Middletown School Committee, a Trustee of The Newport Yacht Club Endowment, Newport Hospital Board of Governors, Board of Directors of The Friends of Glen Manor House, Salve Circle of Scholars, and the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport/Bristol Counties. The alumni activities of Rogers and Simmons, Rose Island Foundation, Seaman’s Church Institute, and WOWS gave her great fulfillment.
Jean’s enduring curiosity led her to many travel adventures. For years she ran a local shop, Iron and Pine, when she wasn’t skiing, sailing, or traveling!
Jean is survived by her daughter Lorrie, son-in-law Ron, her brother James Vanicek and his wife Sally, nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.
She was predeceased by her parents Mr. and Mrs. V.J. Vanicek, her husband Bill, son Skip, and daughter Dawn.
A memorial service celebrating Jean’s life will held at the Newport Yacht Club, Long Wharf, Newport on August 28th at 2:30pm
