Obituary for Jane A. Farley
Jane A. (Murphy) Farleyof Cumberland, RI (formerly of Providence) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday February 12, 2022. She was the wife of the late Robert V. Farley and mother to Robert V. Farley, John F. Farley, Jane Pontes, and Richard E. Farley. Grandmother of Amanda, Hannah, Joseph, Jack, Conor, and James Farley, and Katie, Matthew, and Elizabeth Pontes. Great grandmother of Trevor, Lily, and Brody. Sister of Dr. Richard E. Murphy and the late Mary E. Mullen.
Jane was a member of Salve Regina University’s first graduating class in 1951 (i.e., the “Pioneer Class”), where she was valedictorian, president of the student body, and the first recipient of Salve’s Fullbright Scholarship, which enabled her to continue her education at the University of Toulouse and the Sorbonne in Paris.
After completing her studies, she then began a teaching career, first at the former Elmhurst Academy in Providence and later in the North Providence public school system.
Her unwavering devotion to Salve Regina University resulted in her receiving 1981 Outstanding Alumni Award and the 2006 Salve Regina Mission award. She was also the first Salve alumna to be inducted into the Mercy Honor Society, Sigma Phi Sigma
A memorial service will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Jane Murphy Farley Scholarship for Autism, Salve Regina University, 100 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
