Obituary for James T. Minuto
James T.Minuto of Providence died on December 15, 2016 after a fulfilling life as a husband, father, city planner, lawyer, and college educator. After a brief battle with cancer, he departed this world peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Janice Minuto, and his son, Josh, daughter-in-law, Bernadette of San Diego and their two children, Connor and Sara; his daughter, Jocelyn and her husband, Brian Merken and their daughter, Violet of Culver City, CA.
Jim was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on February 4, 1944 to Thomas and Theresa Minuto. He graduated from Brown University in 1966. He then pursued a masters degree at the New School for Social Research in New York City. On a trip to Providence in the summer of 1967, he fell in love with Janice. They were married the following January. Jim worked as a city planner in Cranston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. He then worked for the Southern California Association of Governments in Los Angeles, California, where the family relocated in 1978. He then earned a law degree from Loyola Law School in 1982 after which he practiced law fulltime. Homesick for the quieter life of New England and after raising their children, Janice and Jim returned in 1999 to Providence, where he began a third career in teaching, joining the faculty of Community College of Rhode Island where he taught courses on Political Science and American History until this year. They enjoyed dancing to rock and roll, walking with their dog, Emma, and talking about the state of the world.
Jim is also survived by his brother Tom Minuto and sister-in-law Roberta of Connecticut and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and students of CCRI, neighbors, and many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday in the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home from 9 to 10:30am at which time the procession to St Sebastian Church will
begin for an 11am Mass. Burial will be in Swan Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be sent to CCRI Foundation for James Minuto Social Science Scholarship, c/o CCRI, 400 East St., Warwick, R.I. 02886
