Obituary for Irene Ann Daniels

Providence: Irene Ann Daniels, 82 died Wednesday at the Hope Health Hospice Center surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of Stephen McNulty Daniels for 48 years prior to his passing.

Born in Pawtucket to the late Tony and Polly (Alfonso) Tente, she was a longtime fixture of the city’s East Side. In recent years, she resided in Garden City, Cranston, and cherished her time as a winter resident of Delray Beach, Florida. She was predeceased by her brother Dennis J Tente Esq. of South Kingstown.

Irene found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was a perfect cup of coffee, a glass of scotch, or a long afternoon of laughter with her dear friends. A playful spirit at heart, she was a master yo-yo artist and took immense pride in teaching her grandchildren the finer points of baseball, football, and ping-pong.

Irene was a nurse at Butler Hospital for more than twenty years prior to her retirement. Active as a delegate for SEIU 1199 NE, she and the team led the fight for policies protecting the rights, safety, and benefits of the staff. To this day this work continues to ensure better working conditions for the workers and their patients at the hospital. Often after an evening shift on D4, she enjoyed the company of her co-workers at the East Avenue Cafe.

Though her later years were challenged by Alzheimer’s disease, Irene never lost her love of life and the deep joy she found in her family and friends. This remained possible through the devoted and loving care provided by her daughter, Amy, along with Amy’s husband and sons, who ensured her final chapters were filled with comfort, warmth, and laughter.

She leaves a son, Patrick S. Daniels III and his wife Miriam Laufer of Baltimore; a daughter, Amy BD Smith and her husband Andrew of Providence; She was an aunt, cousin, and friend to many. It was as a grandmother that all her skills came together. Irene was known as Lady to all of her grandchildren: Declan, Cormac, Owen and Kieran Smith and Jonah and Braeden Daniels and Caleb Kurlantzick; they will never forget her hugs, humor, and Santa Lady gifts. Irene will be missed by her two cats Cappy and Maggie and her dog Finn.

The family will receive friends and family on Friday January 2nd from 4-6 at Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home 210 Taunton Ave, East Providence, RI 02914.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 9:45 from the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home 210 Taunton Ave, East Providence, RI 02914 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am in the Church of St Sebastian, Cole Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to HopeHealth Hulitar Hospice Center https://www.hopehealthco.org/ways-to-give/donatenow/
