Obituary for Helen Reynolds Flynn
Helen Reynolds Flynn, 88, only child of Maryellen Sheridan and Thomas Reynolds of County Westmeath, Ireland, born in New York City and raised in the South Bronx. Helen is pre-deceased by her husband Joseph and survived by son Owen Baker-Flynn and his wife Laurie Baker-Flynn of San Francisco, daughter Maura Flynn of Wakefield and daughter Maryellen Flynn-Martin of Cranston, and the late Liam Flynn. She had four grandchildren, Austen Martin and Tyler Martin of Texas, Sara Baker-Flynn of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Dylan Baker-Flynn of San Francisco.
“I wish to thank all the people who enriched my life; my children, my grandchildren, yoga teachers, Irish Set Dance teachers, the book club, the Ursuline nuns of St. Jerome’s Elementary School in the Bronx, the late Norma Goldberg, and the late Mayor Vincent Cianci who made Providence a livable city.”
She was a vegetarian and an incredible cook, cooking organically long before it was cool. No one made better chocolate cookies and now no one ever will. She made incredible sand-wiches that hung together so well it made professional sandwich makers green with envy. She would wrap them in wax paper, eschewing plastic bags, and when you got one it was like open-ing a present.
She loved Irish Step Dancing and Samuel Beckett. While it was never clear which came first, she probably set the record for seeing more productions of Waiting For Godot than anyone else. She loved all things Irish, except, you know…
She loved great artists, great movies, great dancers, great books, great actors, and the British Mysteries.
And animals. Rarely without at least one cat, she loved animals; cats, dogs, snakes, ele-phants, whales, reptiles, and especially the animals in her backyard. Her fondness for squirrels was legendary in the squirrel community.
She loved going to Trinity Square Theater, especially in the 70s, the GAMM Theater more recently, as well as the occasional Broadway show.
She loved Home Depot and often said, “If they sold clothes, I wouldn’t have to shop any-where else.”
A professional woman, again long before it was cool, she held many jobs over the years before finally landing with the State of Rhode Island’s Central Registry where she worked until age 75 before retiring after 30 years.
She came from a family history of laundresses; ironing was steeped in her genes. She loved to iron and ironed EVERYTHING, and we know now if there are angels in heaven the creases in their robes will be just a little sharper.
Per Helen’s request there will not be a viewing or funeral and there will be a celebration for her life when her children get their acts together. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA or McAuley Ministries.
A celebration of her life will take place in July or August when hopefully things will open up a little and when her children get their acts together.
