Harrison Hibbert Huntoon, 78, of Barrington, Rhode Island, passed away on April 28, 2021. Harry was born in Providence, Rhode Island on July 3, 1942, the first child of the late Howard Huntoon, Sr., and the late Sally (Hibbert) Huntoon. Raised in Providence and Little Compton, Rhode Island, Harry attended Moses Brown School in Providence and the Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, graduating in 1960.
Harry continued his education at Trinity College and obtained a graduate degree from Cornell University. He moved to Houston, Texas after graduation to work at NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center as a Procurement Specialist during the Apollo space program. There he met Dr. Carolyn Sue Leach, a scientist and native Louisianian. They married in 1969 and raised one daughter, Sally Ann, in Clear Lake City, Texas. Harry left the space program in the early 70’s and became the Administrator for the Galveston County Health District in Galveston, Texas before starting a computer software business in Houston, MAP Systems, Inc. Around the same time, he began consulting for Providence Braid Company, a textile manufacturing business in Pawtucket, Rhode Island that has been owned and operated by the Huntoon family since 1904. Upon his father’s death, Harry became the President of Providence Braid Company. He and Carolyn relocated to Barrington, Rhode Island in 2001. Harry loved music and enjoyed being on the Board of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and Music School.
Harry is survived by his wife Carolyn, daughter Dr. Sally Huntoon Vitali of Westwood, Massachusetts, son-in-law Hon. Michael A. Vitali, and beautiful granddaughters Lucia Catherine and Sofia Carolyn Vitali. He leaves his brother Howard (Pete) Huntoon, Jr. and sister-in-law Ann of Hope, Rhode Island and his sister Nancy (Huntoon) Forsyth and her late husband William of Burlington, Vermont. He was the loving uncle of Burton and Gina Huntoon, Andrea (Huntoon) and Adam Biehl, Peter and Shannon Forsyth, and Gregory and Meghan Forsyth.
In addition to the Huntoon family, Harry leaves his brother-in-law, Claude “Buddy” Leach and his wife Laura of Lake Charles, Louisiana, his sister-in-law Frances (Leach) Watson and her husband, Robert of Montgomery, Texas, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters-in-law Mixon Lee (Leach) and her husband Paul Brabham, Gloria Hope (Leach) and her husband Creighton Owen, and Martha Ann (Leach) and her husband Ralph Sanderson.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. A private burial will be held.
