Obituary for Gregory G. Troy
Gregory G. Troy, 60, of Smithfield, Rhode Island, died Monday afternoon at home surrounded by his family after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Melrose, MA, Greg was the son of the late Leo and Jeanne Troy, he grew up in Rumford, RI. Â He was the loving husband of Joyce (Masse) Troy and father of Julia Troy of Brooklyn, NY. Â
Greg was a graduate of St Raphael Academy and the University of Rhode Island.
For 37 years Greg was a partner at the Troy, Pires and Allen Insurance agency and became the president of Cross Insurance of Rhode Island after selling the business in 2014. Known for being a witty, smart, dedicated insurance agent, Greg was always there to help his staff and clients. Â He was a past president of the Rhode Island Independent Insurance Agents, a position that his father also held several years earlier.
Greg was passionate about helping his community and was the past president of the East Providence Boys and Girls Club and The To Kalon Club. He also served on the board of the Providence Performing Arts Center and the University of Rhode Island Athletic board. He was involved for many years with the Darlington Girls Softball League and volunteered with the Rhode Island Special Olympics.
Greg was an avid New York Mets and Green Bay Packers fan, and loved playing sports, going to the gym, reading nonfiction books and listening to all of his favorite music from the 60’s and 70’s. He knew every piece of sports and music trivia that has ever existed, and took delight in quizzing his friends and family until they knew it too. Greg was strong, kind, funny, and tremendously caring.  He was loved by his family and friends and he will truly be missed.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Greg is survived by his 9 brothers and sisters Leo J. (Susan), Linda Gustafson, Peter J. (Mary), Christopher V. (Susan), Michael G. (Cathy), Jeffrey L. (Monica), Cynthia Gerrity (John), Andrew P. (Diane), Jennifer Brennan (Ted) and his 38 nieces and nephews.Â
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10am in St Margaret’s Church, Pawtucket Ave., Rumford. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours Thursday 4-8pm in the Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home 230 Waterman St., Providence. Donations in his memory may be made to Brown University for the Brown University Oncology Research Group.
