Obituary for Frederick "Brum" H. Holt
Warwick: Frederick “Brum” H. Holt, 84, of 85 Newton Ave., a sailor, world traveller, former owner of Harold Holt Insurance Agency, Inc. of Providence, and a great dad died in his sleep Friday, August 18, 2011.
Brum was the widower of Nancy Rice Holt, who predeceased him in 2004. They had been married for 52 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Harold and Mabel (Hassum) Holt of Warwick, and had lived in Warwick for 59 years.
A graduate of Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY, he also served in the Navy as a 1st Lieutenant on the Pacific Rim.
He was an active 69 year member of the East Greenwich Yacht Club, (loved his Nordic Tug - the Uncle Nanc) was a member of the Providence Rotary Club, Freemasons, Paddlewheel Steamboatin’ Society of America, and the Society of Honorary Mariners having cruised over 40,000 miles, and raced several times in the Newport to Bermuda race, served on the Race Committee of the US Olympic trials off Newport, travelled both southbound and northbound on the inter-coastal waterway from RI to Punta Gorda, Florida several times in several boats ranging in size from 19 feet to 40 feet. His international travels outside of his Merchant Marine and Naval experience included: cruise through South America to Antarctica in 2009, through several Nordic countries, Panama, Nova Scotia, Caribbean islands and has crossed the Atlantic Ocean on schooners. Land travels included: Germany, Greenland, Australia, Far East (Singapore, Viet Nam, Thailand, and Hong Kong), Switzerland, New Zealand, Rio de Janeiro, France, Iceland, Italy, Africa, Spain, Russia, Bermuda, and many other nations.
Brum leaves a son, Stephen H. Holt of Mansfield, MA and his wife Patricia. He leaves three grandsons; Gregory H. Holt and his fiancée Michelle of Attleboro, MA, and his great granddaughter, Marley, Matthew S. Holt and his fiancée, Jennifer of Brighton, MA and Cody M. Holt of Mansfield, MA and his daughter, Constance Holt of Hope Valley, RI. He also leaves behind his sisters, Lillian Smith of Adamstown, MD and Ruth (Tommy) Smith of Reston, VA and several nieces and nephews. He was the bother of the late Norma King of Wakefield, RI.
