Obituary for Frances Lopez-Morillas
LÓPEZ-MORILLAS, FRANCES (MAPES), 100, died November 6th at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Professor Juan López-Morillas of the Departments of Spanish and Comparative Literature at Brown University. Born September 3, 1918, in Fulton, MO, and raised in Iowa City, IA, she received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Iowa and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She lived in Providence from 1943 to 1978 and 1997 to 2018. She taught Spanish for many years at the Wheeler School and later became a distinguished translator of fiction and non-fiction from Spanish to English: her 23 translated books earned her a listing in Who’s Who in America in 2006. Among them were works by the novelists Benito Pérez Galdós, Camilo José Cela, Miguel Delibes, Carmen Martín Gaite, and Jorge Luis Borges; the philosophers Julián Marías and Fernando Savater; and the early chroniclers of the Americas Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and José de Acosta. She also rendered her husband’s most important scholarly work, The Krausist Movement and Ideological Change in Spain, into English.
She is survived by her children, Martin Morell of New York City (Sanda Horowitz), Consuelo López-Morillas of Bloomington, IN (Enrique Merino), and Julian Lopez-Morillas of Crockett, CA (Jannie Dresser); three grandchildren, Diego Merino, Miguel Merino, and Sara Morell; one great-grandchild, and one nephew, John Roseberg of Rockford, IL. She was preceded in death by her sister, Amy Virginia Mapes Roseberg, and her parents, Erwin K. Mapes and Laura Hinkhouse Mapes, all of Iowa City.
There will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Hope Hospice, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904, or https://www.hopehealthco.org; to one of her favorite charities, the International Rescue Committee; or to any appropriate charity of the donor’s choice.
