Obituary for Frances Cooper
Frances Grace Murphy “Murph” Cooper, 96, died peacefully September 1, 2014 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Hospice of renal cancer. She was born October 16, 1917 the second of Ella and William Murphy’s six children. In 1939, she married the late Ernest Arthur Cooper in Philadelphia and they raised their family in Springfield PA, moving in retirement to Providence, RI in 2005.
Family and friends, her Christadelphian faith, and horticulture were primary passions. After retirement from a full-time career, she enrolled at the Barnes Foundation and subsequently joined The Scott Arboretum volunteer corps at Swarthmore College contributing hundreds of hours annually there as well as to the Philadelphia Flower Show both as an exhibitor and as a judge.
Frances is survived by her sisters: Constance Heiniecke of Thailand and Elizabeth “Betty” Schiendelman of California; a bevy of nieces and nephews and their families; her children: David E, Cooper (Louise), of Glendora, California, Dr. Judith Cooper Andersen Berk (Dr. Willam Berk) of Plymouth, Michigan, and Reverend Janet M. Cooper Nelson (Rev. Dr. Stephen, J. Nelson) of Providence; her 5 grandchildren, Jonathan Cooper of Glendora, CA, Timothy Cooper of Seattle, WA, and Deborah Cooper Styles,( Bradley Styles) of Simi Hills, CA, Ashley Cooper Andersen Zantop (Peter Zantop) of Minneapolis, MN, and J. Geoffrey Nelson of Brooklyn, NY; and her 3 great-grandchildren, Logan and Lucas Styles and Alexandra Grace Zantop.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, October 18th at 11 AM in Manning Chapel, at Brown University with reception following at the Brown Faculty Club. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Home and Hospice Care of RI at 1085 N. Main Street, Providence, RI 02906
