Obituary for Edward Euvard Davis
Edward E. Davis passed away at his home in Providence, R.I. on August 4, 2016.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 4, 1923, he was the son of the late Edward F. Davis and Evangeline L. Davis. His family moved from Pittsburgh to Westerly, R.I. in 1940. He completed his secondary education at the Moses Brown School from which he graduated in 1940. He entered Brown University in 1941, only to have military service require his withdrawal in December 1942. He joined the US Naval Reserve in 1943 and received training at the State University of New York Maritime College. He was commissioned Ensign USNR in 1944.
He married the late Dorothy Moore Davis in January 1947. They enjoyed 63 happy years of marriage until Dorothy’s death in May 2010.
Ed’s first civilian employment was with the Gulf Oil Corporation as a regional agent in northeastern Connecticut from January 1947 until May 1952. He then accepted a position with the George C. Moore Company in Westerly, RI. He functioned in several capacities with the Moore Company in sales management, as a Director and the Corporation Secretary and as the Chairman of the Pension Committee.
Ed’s love for sailing and ships began during his teenage years when he crewed on a Watch Hill 15, “Pixie”, with Harriet Urban. In his later years, Ed and his late wife, Dorothy, went on many cruises including one to Antarctica. Ed enjoyed many recreational activities including skiing, swimming, running and riding motorcycles.
Ed is survived by his three children, Candace Sanford, Dorothy Singer and Charles Davis, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and his sister-in-law, Patricia M. Moore.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 10th at 11AM in the Calvary Church, Stonington, Ct.
