Obituary for Edith Blish
Edith Josephine “Jody” Blish (Smith), 77, died Monday at her home in Rumford. She was She also had a home in Westport, MA where she spent her summers. She was born in Providence on August 20, 1937.
Mrs. Blish was a teacher of mathematics at Lincoln School in Providence immediately after her graduation from college in 1959 until her retirement in 1995. She was the wife of the late John H. Blish, a lawyer who founded Blish and Cavanagh law firm in Providence in 1986. She graduated from Lincoln School in 1959 and Mount Holyoke College in 1963. She received a master’s degree in math from Brown University.
She achieved the status of Life Master, making her a player of the highest rank in U.S. contract bridge tournament play. An avid player of duplicate bridge tournaments throughout New England, she participated in the North American Bridge Championships and American Contract Bridge League play. Jody Blish was a member of the Rhode Island Bridge Association and of the Acoaxet Club in Westport. After she left full-time teaching she was a tutor to several math students in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She was a tennis player and an active follower of Brown University football and Providence College basketball.
She is survived by her son, Geoffrey H. Blish of Austin, TX, her daughter Catherine Blish of North Providence, brothers: Ronald B. Smith, Jr. of East Lansing, MI and Robert Ellis Smith of Providence, and her sister Georgia Smith Regnault of The Hague, Netherlands, a grandson: Jackson R. Blish of North Providence, seven nephews and one niece.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30am in Central Congregational Church, Angell St. Providence. Burial will be private.
