Obituary for Clinton D. Baer
Clinton D. Baer, Sr., 102, passed away on October 27, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. Born in 1918 in Swansea, MA, he was the son of the late Adolf and Ruth Durfee Baer.
Mr. Baer, after working on the family farm, then worked at a tire factory in Fall River, MA which allowed him to acquire a Model A Ford, the first automobile in his family. He enlisted in the United States in the Army Air National Corps prior to the start of World War II. He sailed through the Panama Canal to Hawaii and was stationed at Hickham Field during the December 7, 1941 attack. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action. He served as a crew chief for B17s and participated in the battles of Midway and the South Pacific, receiving Bronze stars for each campaign. Although he seldom spoke of his war experiences, he was proud of his service and later in life entertained his children and grandchildren with many stories.
Following his military service, Mr. Baer married Bernice (Mitchell) Baer in 1945 and settled in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. He established a masonry business and worked as a master bricklayer and stone mason. He singlehandedly built the brick home in which he and Bernice raised their three sons and lived in for 63 years. They were married for 70 years and enjoyed many retirement years wintering in Florida and Texas and traveling cross-country. Mr. Baer was an avid rock hounder, making handcrafted jewelry with his finds. In retirement he enjoyed baking to indulge his taste for sweets.
He is survived by his sons, Clinton Baer, Jr., and his spouse, Elizabeth Roberts Baer of Silver Spring, MD, and Carl D. Baer and his spouse, Kathy Baer, of Warwick. He also leaves four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two nieces. He was predeceased by his spouse; his son, George Eric Baer; great grandson Ansel Reese Baer; and sister, Ruth Tufft. There are no services. Gifts in his memory may be made to Saint Elizabeth Home at: stelizabethcommunity.org.
