Obituary for Charles E. Hamlin
Charles E Hamlin of RI (formerly of NYC and Washington, DC) died on February 15, 2017. Chuck died at the Philip Hulitar Hospice in Providence 17 months after being diagnosed with cancer. Born on March 16, 1944 in St. Louis, MO to Rosalind M. (Harrison) Hamlin and Charles E. Hamlin, Chuck was a 1962 graduate of East Longmeadow High School and received his BA in English from University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1966. He then pursued graduate study at New York University School of the Arts.
Chuck’s career began in Schenectady, New York, where he served as an advertising trainee for General Electric. He then moved to Manhattan and worked as Associate Editor for Architectural Record at McGraw-Hill and then as Vice President/Group Manager at Burson-Marsteller. He spent the last 10 years of his career as Vice President of Communications at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. He retired to Little Compton, RI in 2003 where he and his husband, Paul, founded Sakonnet River Pie.
Chuck’s work reflected a lifelong passion for design and architecture. In 2004, he was made an Honorary Member of the American Institute of Architects. This distinguished award, given to a few each year, recognizes outstanding service and contributions from individuals outside of the architectural profession.
Chuck is survived by his husband, Paul Bergeron, his sisters, Carol E. Hamlin of VT, Cathy E. Homicz of NH and her husband AJ Homicz, his sister-in-law, Rachel Bergeron of CT and her husband H. Alton Allen, as well as four nieces, three nephews, three great nieces, and seven great nephews.
A Requiem Eucharist will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 50 Orchard Avenue, Providence, RI. Following the service, a brunch will be served where family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm. A private inurnment will take place at Swan Point Cemetery later in the day.
