Born in Brooklyn, NY, Cait’s family moved to Providence in 1944. She attended Elmhurst Academy with her sisters, Beatrice and Virginia, and went on to graduate from Pembroke College.
Cait’s theater experience began with the plays at Elmhurst, and grew with her involvement with Sock and Buskin and Brownbrokers while at Pembroke. It flowered through more than 50 years with summer stock around New England, Theater by the Sea, on the Cape, The Players, Second Story, Academy Players, Aurea, and the founding of Trinity Rep. She produced and directed Linda Monchuk in “From the Balcony,” was house manager at PPAC and did front of house at The Gamm. At Barker Playhouse she served as Vice-President of the Board and on the Production Committee. She experienced every aspect of theater, participating in scores of productions as director, stage manager, and occasionally as an actor. She enjoyed set construction and technical elements.
Community theater was her passion - to uncover and encourage local talent, to share with others what she did for love. This was apparent in her early work as an educator. She created a unique classroom environment for alternative students in Apponaug and guided the development of the Parents Cooperative School in Narragansett.
Cait was also fiercely loyal to her fellow Elmhurst alumnae. She made every effort to preserve the bonds of friendship and shared values developed there.
In these last weeks, Cait received an outpouring of love, gratitude, and compassion which helped her find peace. The staff of Bethany Home and Kindred Hospice respected her dignity as a person and let her know that their care was rooted in genuine concern and love.
Cait is survived by her sister, Virginia Calvo, two generations of nieces and nephews, and loyal friends. Family services will be private but a tribute is planned after the holidays at Barker Playhouse.
Donations in her memory may be sent to Barker Playhouse 400 Benefit Street Providence, RI 02903 or to The Elmhurst Alumnae Association 5 John Street Greenville, RI 02828.
