Obituary for Barbara J. Botsaris
Barbara J Botsaris was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1932 to John Markos Botsaris of Trianta, Rhodes, Greece - Homer’s famed Ialysos - and Smaragdi Moscovitou, of Marasi in Rhodes, the city of Hippodamos. She grew up in Sharon, Pennsylvania, home to many Rhodian immigrants, who had left Rhodes to find work in the mines and mills of Western Pennsylvania. Educated at Mercyhurst College and later at Cornell University, where she earned a masters in Human Ecology, Barbara began her career as a registered dietician at hospitals in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. As a young adult, she moved to New England, where she was a dietician in hospitals in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. She retired from the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Barbara loved the world of wellness, and took pride in helping her patients, whom she inspired to be mindful of healthy habits. Outside her work with patients, she enjoyed her family, her family’s dogs, and her church in Weston, Massachusetts and Cranston, Rhode Island. She spent the last few years of her life near her niece in Providence, Rhode Island. Barbara died of renal failure on June 5.
She leaves her nephew and niece, Stephen and Panetha (Nychis) Ott of Providence, her grand-nephew, Spencer Florence of Chicago, her cousins, Amy Moscovitis Calvert and family of Sharon, Pennsylvania, and her relatives of the Botsaris, Pangalis, Papaminas, and Moscovitis families. She was predeceased by her sister, Amelia Botsaris Nychis, who died in 2018.
The family would like to thank the employees of Wingate at Blackstone Boulevard and Tockwotton on the Waterfront for all their love and excellent care of Barbara. Barbara will be buried at Linwood Cemetery in Weston, Massachusetts, next to her koumbaroi – her sister, Amelia Botsaris Nychis, and her brother-in-law, Peter V. Nychis. Due to our concern for everyone’s safety during COVID-19, funeral and burial services will be private, but the gravesite service will be accessible by zoom (signal permitting). Please contact Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home for more information. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Massachusetts chapter of the SPCA, the National Council on Aging, the American Friends of the Blind in Greece, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
