Obituary for Amelia J. B. Nychis
Amelia Botsaris Nychis of Weston, MA, died peacefully on January 23, 2018 in Providence, RI, after a long illness. The wife of the late Prof. Peter Vasilios Nychis, she devoted her life to education and to helping students with financial need realize their college dreams.
Born in Sharon, PA, Mrs. Nychis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Pennsylvania College for Women, now Chatham University, in Pittsburgh and later earned a master’s degree in constitutional law from Cornell University. She also was the recipient of an honorary doctorate for her contributions to the field of education from Mount Ida College, where she served on the Board of Trustees. As a long-time Director of Financial Aid and Senior Advisor to the President on Government Relations at Wellesley College and a founding member of COHFE, the Consortium on Financing Higher Education, she worked tirelessly on increasing financial aid, both on institutional and national levels, and on women’s education.
Mrs. Nychis was a devoted parishioner of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Weston, MA, a long-time member of its women’s Philoptochos Society and the chairwoman of the Scholarship Committee for more than three decades, still serving as its Emerita Chair at the time of her death. As a student, she was active in the Civil Rights Movement. A life-long member of the Democratic Party because of its historical dedication to education and the welfare of the people, she volunteered on committees in the hope and belief that the party would continue to be true to its mission.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara Botsaris, of Providence, RI; her daughter and son-in-law, Panetha Nychis Ott and Stephen Ott, of Providence, RI; her grandson, Spencer Florence, of Chicago, IL; and many loving cousins in northwestern Pennsylvania and in Maryland. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Caylee Tharene Nychis-Florence.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wingate on Blackstone Boulevard in Providence, RI and her doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital for the care which enabled her to live so that she could continue the work she loved.
At her request, her body was donated to Harvard University Medical School for the advancement of science. Funeral services were private. A memorial service took place at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St., Weston, MA, on Sunday, March 4, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
