Joan Carlson, (Yancey), 68, of Foster passed away comfortably and pain free on Feb. 18 at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center. Joan, aka Eula Nissen, was an educator, knitter, quilter, seamstress, baker, an award-winning-humorous-competitive shooter and wife, partner and best friend to Peter, who she said made her smile.
Joan earned a BA from Boston University and a MLS from Simmons College. She taught English in Kanazawa, Japan and was the librarian at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf and Killingly Central and Killingly Memorial Elementary Schools in Killingly, CT. She leaves a legacy of a joy of reading and books and, as education and learning was the focus of her life, she donated her body to the Brown Medical School so that her passing will enhance the knowledge and skills of future doctors.
Joan leaves behind a husband, a son, 2 sisters, 6 in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of good friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Women for Women International, 4455 Connecticut Ave. NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20008 or the charity of your choice. The memorial service will be private.
