Obituary for Stephen P. Ellis
Stephen P. Ellis, formerly of Rumford, died on July 9, 2022 at Pacifica Senior Living Victoria Court in Cranston, RI. Born in 1946 he was the son of Theodore and Irene (Perley) Ellis of Providence. Steve grew up in the Hope Street neighborhood graduating from Hope High School in 1964 and the University of Rhode Island in 1970.
A 21-year veteran of the Marine Corps and Army Reserves, he served as NCO in artillery and hospital units. He was an Eagle Scout and later a Cub Scout den father.
Steve worked for 29 years as a social case worker for the State of Rhode Island. He also worked as a licensed practical nurse and delivery driver. After retiring in 2008 he volunteered at the Bread of Life food pantry in Rumford.
Steve was an amateur genealogist and had traced his Puritan family roots to Surrey and Lincolnshire, England.
He was formerly married to Susan (Bradley) Sweet of Florida. He is survived by his brother Theodore Ellis and Karen Ellis of Wickford, his son Joshua Ellis and Jodi Mesolella of Cumberland, grandsons Jack and James Ellis, best friends Ellen Murphy, John Recupero, and Roy Zbyr.
Calling hours are respectfully omitted. A memorial service will be held at Rehoboth Congregational Church in Rehoboth Village, MA on Saturday, July 30 at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to Operation Stand Down RI, 1010 Hartford Ave, Johnston, RI 02919.
