Obituary for Joan Leila Governo
Joan Leila Governo, (Barton) 86, of Seekonk, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2022, at Steere House Nursing Center in Providence from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Providence, Joan was the daughter of the late Walter & Leila (Nadeau) Barton. She was predeceased by her younger sister, Deborah (Barton) Scarpaci.

Joan leaves a son, David M. Governo (Tina Governo) of Wabun, MA, and daughters, Meg Governo of Cranston, RI, and the late Kimberley A. (Governo) Schor. She was the grandmother of Sarah Allar, Benjamin Allar (Katie McGrail), Greta Del Bonis, and Margot Del Bonis and aunt to Marc Scarpaci.

Gardening, knitting, and politics were just three of the many interests Joan had throughout her life. Prior to retiring, Joan was the program director at Sturdy Memorial Hospital for the then newly formed Lifeline Program. She loved working with the elderly she served and spoke fondly of her experiences for years to come. Joan’s most joyful moments, however, were definitely those spent with her beloved grandchildren whom she treasured.

Donations in her memory may be made to The Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island.
