Obituary for Geoffrey W Ribbans
Geoffrey W. Ribbans, 94, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 29. He was born and grew up in London, son of the late Wilfred and Rose (Burton) Ribbans. A graduate of King’s College, London, he taught at Belfast, St. Andrews and Sheffield universities before being appointed Gilmour Professor of Spanish at Liverpool University. During his 15 years tenure he was Editor of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies and the first Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. In 1978 he emigrated to the U.S. where he was appointed the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Hispanic Studies at Brown University. He became Emeritus in 1999.

In 1997 he was given the Spanish honor of Encomienda de la Orden de Isabel la Catolica. A world-renowned scholar of Galdos, Machado and Unamuno, noted author of several books and numerous articles, he actively taught and promoted Catalan language and culture. He continued to support and encourage his many students and colleagues throughout his life.

He was the devoted husband of the late Madeleine (Cumming nee Willmann) Ribbans and loving father of Helen Ribbans, Peter Ribbans and his wife Abby, grandfather of John and Max, and stepfather to Madeleine Cumming and partner Richard Adams. He loved music, art, theatre and travel. Despite all his achievements, he was a modest, amiable and very gentle person with a mischievous sense of humor.

Funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Geoffrey can be made to Doctors Without Borders.
