Obituary for Constance (Buffum) Cox
Constance Buffum Cox, 96, of Providence, RI, formerly of Milton, MA and Little Compton, RI, died peacefully at home with family on March 20, 2018. She was the loving wife of the late Andrew H. Cox, originally from Bangor, ME.
Born in Providence on March 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William P. and Constance (Arnold) Buffum. She was educated at the Wheeler School (class of 1939) and Smith College (class of 1943). During WWII she worked at the General Electric base plant in Providence as an efficiency analyst. After moving to Boston, she was employed by Harvard Business School, grading papers and exams. Later she became a personnel director for the Gilchrist Company.
As a result of the astute matchmaking skills of her two dear friends, Ruth and Nelson Darling, Jr., she and Andrew H. Cox were married in Providence, on December 30, 1950. They lived first in Swampscott and then Milton, MA. She was a lover of nature, always attuned to even the most subtle seasonal changes, whether in the woods of Milton or the meadows and beaches of Little Compton where she summered her entire life.
She was also a quiet activist, deeply committed to social and civic issues of her time. A board member of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mass., The Window Shop and the Judge Baker, she was also a tireless volunteer for the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts and spent countless hours with her slide rule, developing complex mathematical formulas to ensure a more equitable tax distribution system to benefit Massachusetts schools.
She loved music and attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with her friends, nearly every Friday afternoon. An enthusiastic traveler, she was fascinated by maps and believed that the best way to get to know a strange city was to first get lost in it. A voracious reader of newspapers and books, she enjoyed sharing ideas on almost any subject, whether it be current events, art, politics or literature. Her intelligence, curiosity, wit and humor made her an unsurpassed companion and her kindness and loyalty made her a true friend to many.
She was the loving mother of Emily Sinagra, Deborah Marion, grandmother of Dominique, Elena and Tristan Sinagra, Anna Marion Kidd, her husband Benjamin Kidd and Andrew Marion, great grandmother to Logan and Charlotte Kidd and William Marion, as well as a devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her brothers, Thomas A. and William P. Buffum, Jr., their wives Jane (Churchill) and Jean (Fitz) Buffum and a niece, Joanna “Jenny” Chamberlin.
Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 7th at 11am in the Redwood Chapel at Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her memory to the Sakonnet Preservation Association. www.sakonnetpreservation.org 401-635-8800
