Donate to Brown University Medical School
Each of us has benefited from the rapid advance of medical science. A vital part
of the medical research and education that makes this advance possible is the
generosity of those individuals who at death donate their bodies to medical
science. In Rhode Island, the medical school at Brown University needs about
thirty five donations each academic year for research and instruction.
We are proud of the special relationship our firm has enjoyed with the Brown
University Anatomical Gift Program since its inception in 1967. Monahan-Kelly
Drabble-Sherman contracts with Brown to provide transportation to the medical
school, complete and file the death certificate, and when the studies are
complete, arrange for the cremation of the remains. The remains of each donor
are carefully identified and delivered to the crematory in an individual
cremation coffin. When the cremated remains are returned to the funeral home,
the donor's family is notified in writing. There is no charge to the estate or
surviving family of the donor for any of these services.
In addition to the services which we perform under the agreement with Brown, we
will assist families with obituaries at no charge, and arrange for paid death
notices at the regular rates charged by the newspapers selected. We will also
assist with with the arrangement of a memorial service at a reduced fee and we
will provide register books, prayer cards and memorial folders at our standard
price.
A word of caution. When one donates one's body to science the survivors are
denied a funeral and the closure a funeral provides. It is important that a
potential donor's family is completely comfortable with the idea that even the
committal of cremated remains may be two years or more after death. That
lengthy delay can be deeply distressing to people who have not accepted and
adjusted to it.
